Daily order of prayer

ORA ET LABORA

A WAY TO SANCTIFY LIFE AND STUDY

Collective committed rhythms actually liberate us, in contrast to the individualized, flexible, autonomous schedules we mainly keep.
— Elizabeth Oldfield

Our hyper-individualistic culture makes little space for shared schedules around which we might orient ourselves towards God and each other. This Daily Order of Prayer is one small attempt to subvert this cultural trend, so that communal life becomes the rock around which we build the rest of our schedules, rather than the other way around. Prayer is the centre of our life together. From prayer flows everything else, dutiful study, animated conversation, and shared labour - but all of these begin and end in prayer.

We invite all students, religious or not, into this contemplative, communal way of life. Our belief is that there is something in these shared rhythms, read from a page and not a screen, that can act as medicine for souls sick from hurry and disembodied interaction.

The Daily Order of Prayer happens Monday through Thursday at Saint Mary’s and Thursdays at Dalhousie.

The Liturgy of the Hours

MORNING PRAYER 9:45
EVENING PRAYER 4:15

The Liturgy of the Hours also known as the Divine Office or Opus Dei (The Work of God) is the official prayer of the Catholic Church. These are short, student-led services usually consisting of three psalms, a reading, canticle, and intercessions.

Angelus & Spiritual Reading

Noon

The Angelus is a meditation on the Incarnation, traditionally prayed daily at noontime. We follow the Angelus with just a few minutes (usually about 5) to hear from the writings of Saints, Church Fathers and Mothers, and other holy men and women.

Holy Mass

saint mary's 2:30, wednesdays
Dalhousie 2:30, Thursdays

The Mass is the source and summit of the Catholic Faith. The Liturgy is celebrated by our Chaplain or other visiting priests and supported by students in the areas of Sacred music, readings, hospitality, altar serving, and preparing for the Mass.
